About Farflung

Farflung is a free daily geography puzzle you play right in your browser. Each expedition hands you five clues — a border, a coastline, a language, a continent, a scrap of history — and asks you to pin a country that fits. There is no list to choose from: you find the country on an interactive world map, drop your pin, and commit to the answer.

The twist is the scoring. Almost every clue has more than one valid answer, and any correct country counts — but the obvious pick earns the least distance. A safe answer might carry you 40 km; the answer most players never think of can earn the full 100. Five clever pins make a perfect 500 km expedition, which is why Farflung rewards recall and lateral thinking in equal measure.

The game runs in four modes. Daily gives everyone the same five prompts and one attempt, with a fresh expedition each local day. Classic puts a 60-second clock on every pin. Wander removes the clock entirely and lets you think. Unlimited — the edition on this page — lets you start another expedition whenever you want instead of waiting for tomorrow. Past expeditions stay playable from the menu, so a missed day is not a lost day.

It is free, needs no download and no account, and works on desktop and mobile browsers. One pin per clue means one commitment per clue — read carefully, think about the second-best answer, and see how far it takes you.

How a Run Works

  1. 01

    Pick a mode

Start with the Daily if you want the same five prompts as everyone else, or choose Classic for a 60-second clock, Wander for no clock at all, or Unlimited to start a fresh expedition immediately.

  2. 02

    Read the clue

Each clue is one sentence, and most of them fit several countries. A clue about a landlocked neighbour, a coastline, or a language narrows the map faster than a clue about a continent.

  3. 03

    Find the country

Pan and zoom the map, or type a name into the search bar when a small country is hard to hit. Selecting a country is not the answer yet — it is just the candidate.

  4. 04

    Drop the pin

Place the pin and commit. You get one answer per clue, so a second guess is not part of the loop. If two countries fit, pin the one you believe fewer players will think of.

  5. 05

    Read the distance

A correct answer earns 40, 55, 70, 85, or 100 km depending on the rarity tier the game assigns, and it explains the result. A wrong pin earns nothing — the clue still counts against your five.

  6. 06

    Finish the expedition

Five pins later you get a total out of 500 km. Review the answers you missed, then start another expedition or come back tomorrow for the next Daily.

Why Rarer Answers Score More

Most geography games stop at correct or incorrect. Farflung treats a correct answer as the starting point: every valid country is sorted into one of five tiers — common, uncommon, rare, elusive, and the top "farflung" tier — worth 40, 55, 70, 85, and 100 km. The obvious country is safe and cheap; the answer almost nobody picks is the whole point.

That single rule changes how you play. Instead of scanning the map for the first country that fits, you scan for the second or third country that fits and then judge which one is less likely to appear on everyone else’s map. It rewards the kind of geography knowledge that does not come up in a capital-city quiz — small states, unusual borders, island nations, countries that share a language with a much more famous neighbour.

There is no retry inside an expedition. One clue, one pin, one distance. That constraint is what makes the five prompts feel like a puzzle rather than a lookup exercise, and it is why a 500 km run is worth talking about.

Daily, Classic, Wander and Unlimited

Daily is the shared puzzle: the same five prompts for every player, one attempt each, and a new expedition at midnight in your own time zone. A guest session lets you play without creating an account — sign-in is optional and only syncs settings. Classic keeps the same clues but puts a 60-second clock on each pin, which turns the rarity decision into a speed decision. Wander removes the clock so you can study the map and reason through every border.

Unlimited is the edition this page embeds. Instead of waiting for the next Daily, you start another expedition whenever you want, which is where the learning loop really works: five expeditions in a row and the same clue types come back in new shapes. The official game treats unlimited play as a future feature rather than a mode, so if you want the strict once-a-day version, play the daily at farflung.game.

The game also keeps the past week of expeditions playable from its menu, tracks a streak and a logbook, and offers an untimed practice round when you want to try a prompt without recording a result. A wrong pin is 0 km, and the same country can satisfy more than one prompt if it genuinely fits both.

Farflung vs. Globle and Worldle

Farflung belongs to the daily geography family, but it asks a different question. Globle gives you a hot-or-cold reading on one hidden country until you land on it. Worldle shows a silhouette and returns direction and distance. Both are guessing games with a single target.

Farflung starts with the clue instead of the country. You are not hunting one hidden answer — you are choosing among several valid ones and betting on rarity. That makes it closer to a trivia game with a map attached than to a deduction game, and it means two players can both be right and still finish with very different scores.

If you already play a daily geography game, Farflung is a good second one: the five-prompt format takes a couple of minutes, and the rarity rule gives you a reason to care about the answer you would normally skip.

Farflung Tips & Tricks

  • Think of two or three countries that fit before you pin anything — then pick the rarest one you can actually justify.
  • Small countries are underrated: a correct microstate often scores near the top of the rarity range.
  • Use the search bar for island nations and microstates; hunting them on the map wastes the clock in Classic.
  • Landlocked, coastal, and "borders exactly N countries" clues narrow the map much faster than continent clues.
  • In Classic, spend the first ten seconds deciding, not searching — a rare answer you cannot find is worth zero.
  • Play a few Wander expeditions before chasing a score. The mode has no clock, so it is the cheapest place to learn the map.
  • Read the explanation after every pin, including the correct ones. It is the fastest way to learn why a country was or was not accepted.
  • The Daily opens at local midnight — check the countdown on the game screen before you start a late-night run.

Farflung FAQ

What is Farflung?

Farflung is a free daily geography puzzle played in the browser. Each expedition gives you five clues and asks you to pin a country that matches each one on an interactive world map. Any valid answer counts, but rarer answers earn more distance, up to 500 km per expedition.

Is Farflung free to play?

Yes. Farflung is free in your browser with no download and no account. You can play the Daily as a guest, and Unlimited mode lets you start as many expeditions as you like.

How does Farflung scoring work?

Every correct answer earns 40 to 100 km depending on how rare that country is for that clue. The common answer is worth less; the less obvious valid answer is worth more. Five maximum-value pins give a perfect 500 km expedition, and a wrong pin earns nothing.

How many clues are in one Farflung expedition?

Five. Every expedition, in every mode, is five clues with one pin each. Daily uses the same five prompts for all players until the next reset.

How many countries can I pin in Farflung?

197: the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, and Taiwan. The map and search bar cover all of them, and any country that genuinely fits a clue is a valid answer.

What is the difference between Daily, Classic, Wander and Unlimited?

Daily is the shared puzzle: five prompts, one attempt, a new expedition each local day. Classic adds a 60-second clock per pin. Wander removes the clock so you can think. Unlimited — the edition on this page — lets you start another expedition immediately instead of waiting for the next Daily.

When does the Farflung daily puzzle reset?

A new expedition opens at midnight in your own time zone, so two players in different zones can be on different expedition numbers at the same moment. The unlimited edition embedded on this page counts down to midnight UTC instead — use the countdown on the game screen.

Can I play Farflung on my phone?

Yes. The map supports drag to pan, pinch to zoom, and tap to select, so it works on phones and tablets as well as on desktop. A larger screen still makes small countries easier to hit.

Does Farflung save my progress?

In-progress and finished expeditions are kept in the browser, so a refresh usually restores your run. Saves are local to the browser you play in and are not tied to an account.

Is this the official Farflung game?

No. The official game is at farflung.game, and it blocks third-party embedding, so the playable version on this page is a free edition hosted elsewhere. StealAnEggGame is an independent game page and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Farflung LLC — the official site remains the authoritative source for rules and scoring.
